Public justice systems are easy to misread in the AI cycle.

From the outside, courts, prosecutors’ offices, defender systems, and court administration look like ideal automation targets. They run on text, precedent, forms, evidence, workflows, scheduling, and procedural logic. That is exactly the environment where large language models, speech recognition, document AI, and knowledge graphs can move quickly.

But public justice is not just a text industry. It is an authority industry.

Judicial Support Roles Are Taking the Hardest Hit

The most severe structural shift in the entire sector is the collapse of the traditional legal-support ladder.

The source rates judicial support at an average of roughly 85%, the highest category in the industry. That matters because law clerks, judicial researchers, database managers, and drafting support roles have historically been part of the pipeline into more senior court and legal-system work.

AI now attacks that ladder directly.
